•Who is Suubi• Suubi (hope) is a group of about 65 or so Acholi women (many of whom are widows) who have relocated from war-torn Northern Uganda in search of means to provide for their families. In their journey to find this, they came to Walukuba - the biggest estate in East Africa. Here you will find an abundance of low-income housing but a lack of job opportunity.
The women of Suubi (hope) have used their skills and resources in developing new and inventive ways of creating opportunity. They have collected recycled scraps of paper, hand rolling each piece of paper into an individual bead. The beads are then lacquered, finished, and crafted into unique handmade necklaces and bracelets.
•What We Do• Light Gives Heat has seen the beauty of each bead and each one of these women. And we are simply acting as the vessel – carving the way to create a market for the women of Suubi to sell these necklaces, thus enabling them to improve their way of living and provide for their families. Along with the purchasing of necklaces, Light Gives Heat volunteers run literacy classes, and English classes.
Light Gives Heat buys the necklaces and bracelets directly from the women of Suubi at triple their usual profit.
Our aim is to provide the women with a constant and consistent source of income.
The necklaces are shipped to the US where they are packaged, marketed, and sold. All the profit made from the sale of necklaces and bracelets will go right back into empowering, enabling, and developing diverse projects within East Africa – some of which will go right back to the women of Suubi. |
